Moray Council has agreed to run a 12-month pilot scheme which will allow motorhomes and campervans to stay overnight at the Station Road car park in Burghead.
The decision was made at a meeting of the economic development and infrastructure services committee omn Tuesday.
Councillor Juli Harris said that she was “very supportive” of the plans but raised the idea of implementing the pilot in Aberlour’s Alice Littler Park.
Her amendment was then seconded by Councillor Neil Cameron who said that they are “two very different parks” and would provide the council with a better representation of the scheme.
But following advice from officers, her proposed plan will not be discussed until March 2026 to allow time for budget checks and input from the community.
As it stands, the 12-month-long pilot scheme will only be tested at Station Road car park in Burghead which the council plans to implement during the summer of 2026.
The scheme will allow self-catering campervans and motorhomes to park overnight (6pm to 10am) at the site for a voluntary fee of £7.
Councillor Jérémie Fernandes (Elgin City North, SNP) raised concerns over the likelihood of visitors paying the fee as the voluntary payment will relay on the “goodwill” of visitors.
Cllr Fernandes also wanted to know how much more introducing the pilot scheme in Aberlour would cost.
His queries were answered by head of environment and commercial services Nicola Moss, who said that the cost would be similar but added that she would need to “double check”.
Once the pilot is completed, the findings will be reported back to the council and they will decide on the next steps for the original plan which could see overnight parking allowed at 10 sites across Moray.
