A boy who was struck by a scooter in Aberdeen still suffers nightmares from the incident, his family has said.

The family of the boy spoke out after Alexander Henderson was sentenced at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Henderson struck the nine-year-old boy after driving through a red light at a pedestrian crossing on Great Northern Road on August 10 last year.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving at an earlier hearing.

On Tuesday, Henderson was banned from driving for 12 months and handed a 12-month community payback order with supervision.

Henderson also admitted driving the scooter without due care and attention on July 12 in Aberdeen, driving through a red light and crossing into the opposing carriageway on Inverurie Road and Stoneywood Road.

For this offence, he was fined £450 with a £20 victim surcharge and was handed eight penalty points.

Following Alexander’s sentencing, the mother of the boy released a statement through law firm Digby Brown.

She said the family were glad Henderson accepted responsibility, but added the boy still has nightmares about the incident.

The mum said: “Great Northern Road is very busy, but this accident should never have happened.

“Our son did everything right using the pedestrian crossing and waiting for the green man to cross safely, the driver should have been paying attention to the road.

“We’re glad they have accepted responsibility for the accident, but our once confident little boy now has nightmares about the accident and is very nervous when crossing the road.

“We’re thankful our son didn’t have more serious physical injuries and to everyone who has supported us.”
