Bomb squads have been called to an RAF base after a “suspicious package” was found.
RAF Lossiemouth confirmed a cordon is in place around its base after the package was found during a routine security search.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal has been notified, and everyone is asked to avoid the area whilst teams work with civilian agencies to resolve the issue.
Police Scotland confirmed nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution.
Road closures have been put in place on the B9135 at its junction with the A941, the A9135 at its junction with Muirton Road and Typhoon Road at its junction with B9315.
STV NewsRAF crews confirmed that the package is not part of a previously advertised exercise.
An RAF statement read: “We can confirm that during a routine security search at RAF Lossiemouth, a suspicious package was found.
“EOD have been notified, and a cordon is in place.
“This is not part of the previously advertised exercise activity.
“As a safety precaution, we ask everyone to avoid the area whilst we work with civilian agencies to resolve the issue.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.25am on Thursday, March 12, 2026, a report was received of a suspicious item found at RAF Lossiemouth.
“Emergency services are in attendance. A cordon has been put in place, and nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution.
“There are road closures on the B9135 at its junction with the A941, the A9135 at its junction with Muirton Road and Typhoon Road at its junction with B9315.
“Explosive Ordnance Disposal is aware and will be attending to examine the item.”
