The bomb squad has been called to a harbour in Angus after a suspected explosive device was found.

Police, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and Coastguard crews were called to Arbroath Beach near the lifeboat station after items, including a possible ordnance device, were discovered.

The alarm was raised after 10am on Thursday, with Montrose Coastguard Rescue monitoring the site.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 10.30am on Thursday, January 16, we were called the beach in Arbroath, near the lifeboat station, after items and a possible ordnance device were discovered.

“EOD and HM Coastguard have been contacted.”

A HM Coastguard spokesperson added: “Montrose Coastguard Rescue was sent to Arbroath harbour in response to a report of suspected ordnance made to HM Coastguard at about 10.55am.

“An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit has been informed.

“Montrose CRT will monitor the location. Police Scotland was also alerted.”
