Body of 'beloved son' shot on Caribbean island Canouan to be returned home for funeral

The body of a Scottish man who died after being shot “multiple times” on a Caribbean island in St Vincent and the Grenadines is to be returned home for his funeral.

Daniel Vettrino, from Fife, was found on the island of Canouan with multiple gunshot wounds to his body and later pronounced dead.

It came after the island’s police force said they were called to a report of shots being fired in the Gym Hill area around 11.30pm on June 24.

Local media reported that two men had been arrested in connection with the death.

STV News has contacted the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF).

‘Deeply missed’

Mr Vettrino, 37, had been working as a technical services manager at the luxury Canouan Estate Resort & Villas prior to his death.

He moved from Scotland to Egypt in 2015 and later travelled to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for work in 2024.

Described as “A beloved son, brother, uncle and nephew”, his family have paid tribute and announced his body will now be returned to Scotland.

The post read: “It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of a much loved man and a man who brought so much joy to those around him, Mr Daniel Vettrino, affectionately known to most as Danny.

“Danny tragically passed away on Canouan Island, in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, where he had been living and working, on Thursday, 25th June 2026, aged just 36 years.

“A beloved son, a loving brother, uncle and nephew, Danny was also a cherished friend to so many people across the world. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Mr Vettrino’s funeral will now be held on Friday, August 21, at Kirkcaldy Crematorium.

It continued: “Danny’s funeral service will be held on Friday, August 21, at 3pm, at Kirkcaldy Crematorium, to which all family and friends are respectfully invited.

“Danny’s family would also like to invite you all back to The Elbow Room, Kirkcaldy, after the service, for light refreshments, and to share stories and fond memories of Danny.

“For those who are unable to attend the service in person but would like to watch, a live webcast will be available using the details below.

“Please note, this is the only streaming service available, if you see any others, they are not legitimate.”

A spokesperson for The Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said: “The RSVGPF is investigating a shooting incident that left one man dead in Canouan on June 24, 2026.

“On the above-mentioned date, at approximately 11.30pm, police responded to a report of shots being fired at Gym Hill, Canouan.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered Daniel Vettrino, a 37-year-old Technical Services Manager of Colombia/Scotland, with multiple gunshot wounds about his body.

“He was subsequently pronounced dead by the District Medical Officer. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.”

A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British national who died in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and we are in contact with the local authorities.”
