The family of 15-year-old Liam Buchan have been informed after a body was recovered from the River North Esk on Monday.

A body has been found in the search for a 15-year-old boy who was swept away by a river in Angus.

Liam Buchan was with family and friends near Edzell, at around 4.45pm on Saturday, July 15, when he got into difficulty in the water.

A huge emergency response was sparked including police, fire and coastguard teams from Aberdeen, Arbroath, Montrose and Stonehaven along with a helicopter from HM Coastguard.

Police Scotland said the body of the 15-year-old was recovered from the River North Esk just after 1.30am on Monday.

Formal identification is still to take place, however his family been informed.

In a statement, officers confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

A police spokesperson said: “At around 1.30am on Monday, July 24, a body was recovered from the River North Esk, near Edzell. Formal identification is yet to take place but the family of Liam Buchan, 15, reported missing from the area, has been informed.

“There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”
