A woman has been charged after a pensioner was “hounded” into withdrawing cash from an ATM and made to hand it over.

Police launched an investigation earlier this month into a number of incidents of extortion, which took place in the King Street area of Aberdeen between Wednesday, June 17 and Tuesday, July 7.

Police said the victim was approached by a woman and “hounded” into withdrawing up to a four-figure sum from a shop’s cash machine during the period of coercion.

On Monday, the force confirmed a 28-year-old woman had been arrested and charged in connection with the incidents.

She is expected to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.

PC Louise Calder said: “I’d like to thank members of the public for coming forward and assisting us with our enquiries in this case.

“It is vital that we ensure the vulnerable people in our communities are kept safe from these types of incidents.

“If you suspect that someone you know is being taken advantage of, I urge you to report your concerns to police and they will be investigated.”
