Around 50 firefighters tackle large blaze at hospital site overnight

A large emergency service response was called to a disused office building on the Woodend Hospital site in Aberdeen on Monday night.

Around 50 firefighters have been tackling a large fire on the grounds of a hospital in Aberdeen overnight.

Nine fire appliances, plus a high-reach vehicle and other specialist appliances, remain at the scene of a disused office building, Westholme, on the Woodend Hospital site after being called out at 9.50pm on Monday.

No patients or staff currently occupy the office, and it lies around 60 metres from the closest hospital building.

The public has been urged to avoid the area, and nearby residents are being urged to keep windows and doors closed due to a large volume of smoke.

There are no reported injuries, police confirmed.

NHS Grampian confirmed that appointments and services are running as normal, pointing attending patients to the Eday Road site entrance.

A spokesperson said: “Services and appointments at Woodend Hospital, in Aberdeen, are running as scheduled today and patients should attend as normal.

“Site roads adjacent to the disused office building affected by last night’s fire are cordoned off and patients should enter the site from Eday Road. Our outpatient car parks remain open.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland remain at the scene of the blaze and we’d very much like to thank them for their efforts.

“The building, Westholme, lies around 60 metres from the closest hospital building, and no areas involved in patient treatment are affected.”

An SFRS spokesperson said: “Around 50 firefighters are currently tackling a fire at the Woodend Hospital building on Eday Road in Aberdeen.

“Nearby residents are urged to keep windows and doors closed due to large volumes of smoke, and to avoid the area at this time.

“We currently have nine fire appliance plus a high-reach vehicle and other specialist appliances at the scene after receiving the call just before 9.50pm.

“Emergency services will be on scene overnight and into Tuesday morning as we deal with this incident.”

Police have erected a cordon and have asked the public to avoid the area around the hospital site.

They also confirmed there are no injuries at this stage.

“Enquiries to establish the full circumstances are at an early stage”, a spokesperson added.
