Aberdeen PureGym objects to new padel centre next door because of accompanying gym space

PureGym has lodged an objection against plans to transform a neighbouring premises into a fitness suite they argue could operate as a standalone gym.

Back in June, Slazenger unveiled plans to create a padel centre at the former Ikea click-and-collect unit in Altens, Aberdeen, which closed in March ahead of the retailer’s move to Union Square.

Proposals submitted to Aberdeen City Council include a “small gym area, changing rooms and toilets” along with 11 indoor courts with a shop and equipment hire.

But PureGym have objected to the plans on the grounds the gym area, which would occupy nearly 5,800 square feet, would allow for a “comprehensive range of fitness facilities” beyond serving padel playesr.

Jonathan Wadcock of Urban Agile, on behalf of PureGym, said: “It would be entirely possible for this to operate as a standalone gym facility, attracting visitors that are not using the padel facilities.

“The submitted drawings show Everlast, Centr and Hyrox branding to the proposed gym area, which implies that exercise classes and fitness programmes will be available.”

PureGym argues the future use of the fitness space has not been fully considered and has also raised concerns about transport and parking if the site were used as both a padel centre and a gym.

If the plans are to be approved, Mr Wadcock wants there to be conditions where the gym is only used as a warm-up space.

He said: “It is clearly not essential for the proposed development to include a large gym as it is unusual for padel developments to provide such facilities.”

“If the gym were allowed to operate as a standalone facility, it could adversely affect sustainable transport, highways, and town centre vitality and viability.”
