A woman has died after her car careered off a road and crashed into a tree in Moray.

The 83-year-old was driving a red Vauxhall Astra on the A98 when it left the road near the roundabout junction with the A96 east of Fochabers at around 4.25am on Friday.

Emergency services attended and she was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin where she was pronounced dead by medical staff a short time later.

Her next of kin has been made aware.

The road remains closed to allow for an investigation at the scene and police are also now appealing for witnesses.

Sergeant Steve Manson of the North East Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge anyone who may have information or dashcam footage from the area this morning to get in touch.

“Please pass any information on by calling 101, quoting incident 0320 of March 4, 2022.”
