Police evacuated and sealed off a council building following the discovery of a “suspicious package” containing an "unknown substance".

Emergency services locked down Aberdeen Town House after they were alerted on Monday.

Following an investigation, the package was found to be “not harmful”.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding the incident remains ongoing.

She added: “There was no threat to the wider public.”

Police were supported by crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

During the incident, the council advised members of the public to stay clear of the area.

Afterwards, a council spokesman said: “Police and emergency services have now stood down and the Town House has been returned to Aberdeen City Council.

“Thankfully the package turned out not to be sinister.

“Business as usual tomorrow.”
