A teenage boy has admitted the killing of a 16-year-old at a school in Aberdeen.

Bailey Gwynne died of his injuries at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after the incident at Cults Academy on October 28.

The 16-year-old accused of Bailey's murder, who cannot be named for legal reasons, offered to plead guilty to the lesser charge of culpable homicide at Glasgow High Court on Tuesday, but this was rejected by prosecutors.

Alex Prentice QC said: "The Crown declines to accept that offer of guilty to the culpable homicide charge and will proceed to the murder charge.”

The 16-year-old is also alleged to have had knives or “bladed instruments” and two knuckledusters at a school “without reasonable excuse or lawful authority”.

These two offences are said to have occurred on various occasions between August 1, 2013, and the day of the alleged murder.

He is expected to appear in court again on March 1.

Bailey died at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after suffering what medics described as a "penetrating sharp force injury".

Following his death, hundreds of his fellow pupils attended a candlelit vigil at Cults Parish Church.
