Two fishermen have been rescued from a sinking creel boat which began taking on water near Shetland.

The Majestic got into difficulty around five miles north-east of the island of Yell at around 10am on Thursday.

A Coastguard helicopter involved in a training exercise nearby was on the scene within minutes, joined by three fishing vessels.

The fishermen were taken aboard one of the boats shortly afterwards while the helicopter kept watch overhead.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "It was extremely fortunate that the Coastguard helicopter was in the area on exercise and was able to be on scene in eight minutes.

"The crew did the right thing calling the Coastguard when they realised they were taking on water and getting into trouble.

"The boat is still afloat and the crew are thankfully safe and well. They have the assistance of our helicopter overhead and three other vessels, who are currently alongside."
