Ten drivers have been charged with ignoring road closure signs during recent flooding.

The incidents reportedly happened on the B999 road in Aberdeenshire on Thursday and Friday.

Flooding on the road has been caused by large volumes of water draining from nearby fields between Pitmedden and Tarves.

Hundreds of police officers and firefighters were deployed at the height of extreme weather earlier this month.

Heavy rain forced evacuations and road closures across the north east of Scotland and control rooms in Tayside and Grampian dealt with more than 500 calls from the public.

Police Scotland sergeant Alex Carle said: "The B999 between Tarves and Pitmedden is currently closed due to flooding at Ythsie.

"This has been caused by a blocked drain and the volume of water coming off the surrounding fields onto the road. As a result, the depth of water on the road is constantly changing and as such, Aberdeenshire Council has deemed it necessary to keep the road closed until satisfied it is safe.

"Drivers are urged to obey the road closures throughout Aberdeenshire which are in place to prevent motorists becoming stuck due to the volume of water lying or due to underlying damage to road surfaces, which may cause damage to vehicles."

He added: "There are no excuses for ignoring these and if you fail to comply, you will be charged."
