A woman was caught driving while more than five times the drink-drive limit with an 11-month-old baby in the back seat.

Marion Stephen was charged after officers found her blue Land Rover parked on a grass verge at the side of the A96 in November 2015.

The office manager had pulled over to use the toilet and was trying to get out of the car when officers spotted her. They had been called out to look for the 4X4 following reports of it being driven erratically.

When officers approached the vehicle and began talking to Stephen, they saw she was under the influence of alcohol. The 33-year-old was breathalysed and found to have 115 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

A court heard that officers then discovered the young child strapped into the back seat of the vehicle.

Stephen, of Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, admitted her second drink-driving offence when she appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court last year. She returned to court on Wednesday for sentencing.

Defence lawyer Iain Hingston said: "This has been a catalyst for change in her, in her lifestyle and in her ability to open up to professionals about the problems that she has. It's hard to express how ashamed, angry and embarrassed she is about this."

Sheriff William Taylor told Stephen she had endangered the lives of other people on the road, including the young child. He banned her from driving for three years and placed her under supervision for a year.

She was also placed on a community payback order and told to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.
