Hundreds of hens need a new home in Scotland this month or could otherwise face slaughter.
The British Hen Welfare Trust is holding a rehoming event in Inverness on Saturday, July 18, in a bid to save 250 ex-commercial laying hens.
The charity is urging kind-hearted animal lovers to register their interest by 4pm on Friday.
The hens have spent their lives laying eggs for the food industry and, at around 18 months old, have reached the end of their commercial laying life.
The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) said that without enough homes coming forward, they could be slaughtered.
The charity was established in 2005 and is Britain’s first registered charity for rehoming laying hens.
Andy Hill at BHWT said: “People are often surprised by how much joy hens bring. They’re funny, curious little characters, they love routine, and they’re genuinely a delight to care for. Plus, they’re still more than happy to pop out the occasional egg.
“With the warm weather and long evenings, this is the ideal time to start. These girls are more than ready for a fresh beginning, and they really do make wonderful pets.”
Lorna McGuinness, who has rehomed hens, said: “When you adopt a hen you don’t just save a life – you gain a feathered friend who is affectionate and loves being part of a family.
“They will run to greet you – usually looking for treats – and are curious, cheeky and surprisingly affectionate, so they’re great pets for children.”
Anyone looking to adopt needs to offer the hens security, food, water and care.
