A woman has been sexually assaulted by a man who attacked her in the early hours of the morning.

The 35-year-old’s friend came to her aid and they both chased the attacker away following the incident in the Highlands.

The victim was left uninjured but badly shaken as a result of the attack that took place on Brown Street, Inverness at around 2am on Wednesday.

Police are now looking to trace the man responsible who is described as being around 40-years-old with a slim build and tanned complexion.

He was around 5ft 8in, had short, messy, dark hair at the time of the incident and was wearing a dark coloured top or jacket and light-coloured trousers.

Officers leading the investigation are now appealing for potential witnesses as they increase patrols in the area.

Detective Sergeant Christopher MacLeod said: “Thankfully the victim was not injured as a result of this incident and the man was chased from the area by both the victim herself and a friend.

“We are appealing for any witnesses who believed they saw a man matching the description in the areas surrounding Brown Street, between midnight and 2am on Wednesday morning.

“We remain committed to tackling incidents of violent and sexual crime and will be increasing our patrols in the area, as officers carry out extensive enquiries into this incident.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
