A walker was airlifted to safety by “great flying skills” after suffering a broken ankle while descending a Munro in the Highlands.

Kintail Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) was called out to the South Shiel Ridge in Kintail around 6pm on September 16, following reports of the injured walker.

The group had been making their way off the ridge when the accident happened.

With daylight fading and weather conditions worsening, the Rescue 151 helicopter from Inverness was sent to air the injured man.

Meanwhile, a team of mountain rescue volunteers made their way up the hill to meet the rest of the walking group and escort them safely back to their transport.

KMRT praised the party, noting that they were “very experienced and well prepared” but had simply been unfortunate.

A spokesperson said: “The team were called out on Tuesday night around 6pm to an injured walker on the South Shiel Ridge. As the party were descending off the hill, one of the group sustained a broken ankle.

“With deteriorating light and weather, R151 from Inverness was called to see if they could extract the casualty.

“With great flying skills as always, the helicopter crew managed to extract the casualty.

“A small team of KMRT members made their way up the hill to locate the rest of the party and escort them off the hill and back to their transport.

“This was a very experienced and well prepared group who just got unlucky. Accidents happen.”
