'Very high' wildfire warning in Scotland as crews tackle Cairngorms blaze four weeks on

A warning has been issued across parts of Scotland over the “very high” risk of wildfires this week.

The warning covers eastern parts of the Highlands and also eastern and southern Scotland from Wednesday until Thursday.

Hot and dry weather is expected across the UK in the coming days, with an amber warning for extreme heat in place for much of England on Thursday.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews are still tackling a wildfire in the Cairngorms that first broke out on July 15 near the Ryvoan Bothy, close to Aviemore.

Fire crews are continuing to dampen down hotspots within the area.

“It’s extremely important members of the public exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame during a wildfire warning,” SFRS deputy assistant chief officer Kenny Barbour said.

“These fires place a huge drain on our resources and pose a threat to the safety of our firefighters and members of our communities.”

The warning comes following a wildfire at Lochore Meadows Country Park in Fife, with visitors reporting still seeing smoke and hotspots in the affected area.

A statement on social media said: “While the fire has been extinguished, parts of the area continue to smoulder and there remains a risk of further flare-ups.

“Park staff are closely monitoring the situation, and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are aware and have already attended for a second time on Tuesday, and will return if any further intervention is required.”

It added: “This week’s incident is just another example of irresponsible behaviour and unfortunately, park staff continue to encounter evidence of irresponsible behaviour within the country park on a daily basis. During patrols this week alone, staff found additional sites where irresponsible camping activity and fire pits had been set up, along with remnants of larger campsites that have been left behind in popular recreational areas over recent weeks.

“We are asking visitors to enjoy the park responsibly, take all litter home where possible or use bins provided, and avoid lighting fires or using disposable barbecues. By respecting the park and following the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, everyone can help protect this valued greenspace for people, wildlife and future generations.”

The warning also comes as Andy Burnham said he will consider imposing a ban on disposable barbecues amid the risk of further wildfires as extreme heat continues to grip parts of the UK.

The Prime Minister will chair an emergency Cobra committee on Wednesday in response to a prolonged spell of exceptionally hot and dry weather.
