Tributes to 'exceptional' deckhand who fell from boat in Scapa Flow

A man who died after falling from a boat near Stromness has been described as “deeply respected” and a “true friend”.

Shaun Shepherd was pronounced dead after falling from the vessel in Scapa Flow on July 23.

The 22-year-old from North Uist was working as a deckhand for Inverlussa prior to his death.

In a statement, the company said: “He was an exceptional deckhand whose kindness, dedication and strength of character touched everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.

“He was one of our very best: dependable, hardworking and always willing to take the time to help others. He was not only a deeply respected colleague but also a true friend to so many within the Inverlussa family.

“His loss is being felt profoundly, and he will be missed every day.”

Announcing his death on social media, Shaun’s sister Lauren said: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our dear son and brother, Shaun, who suddenly passed away on Thursday, July 23.

“As a family, we would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support, kind words and sympathy during this very sad time.”

Shaun’s remains are due to be returned to his family via the Lochmaddy ferry on Friday, ahead of his funeral in North Uist on August 1.

North Uist Free Church added: “Our hearts go out to the Shepherd family at this devastating time.”

Inspector David Hall from Police Scotland said: “Around 2.50pm on Thursday, July 23, 2026, we were called to Stromness pier after a report that a man had fallen from a boat.

“Emergency services attended, and the 22-year-old man was pronounced dead a short time later.

“Enquiries are ongoing, and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
