Part of the most northerly secondary school on mainland Scotland has been closed off after concerns were raised about the structure of the building.

A routine inspection by structural engineers identified potential concerns in relation to the condition of the concrete frame in the three-storey 1960s extension block at Thurso High School, Highland council said.

Alternative arrangements are being made to accommodate the affected classrooms and the rest of the school campus remains operational.

Around 750 pupils attend the school in Caithness.

A Highland council spokesperson said: “Following on from a routine site inspection, structural engineers identified potential concerns in relation to the condition of the concrete frame in the three-storey, 1960s extension block.

“The recommendation from the structural engineers is to close the three-storey block until further assessment is carried out.

“Alternative arrangements are being made to accommodate the affected classrooms and discussions are ongoing with the Headteacher in this regard.

“The rest of the school campus remains operational.”
