A road on the Isle of Skye remains closed due to a landslip, forcing drivers to take a 40-mile diversion.

The bank beside the A855 at Idrigill bend, close to the small village of Uig, gave way on Friday evening.

The debris made the road impassable, with council road crews deployed to help clear the carriageway.

The road was closed, and a diversion was put in place, requiring drivers to travel 46 miles via the A87 and A855 Staffin Road around the east of the Trotternish peninsula.

Highland Council has warned that, while there is a shorter route via the Quiraing C1225 road, it requires “significant improvement works” and is therefore unsuitable for high-volume traffic.

A spokesperson said: “We encourage road users, particularly those travelling in larger vehicles, to use the A855, wherever possible.”
