A sinkhole has forced the emergency closure of multiple city roads in Inverness.
Highland Council said Inverness High Street and Bridge Street was closed on Thursday around 7pm after a burst water main was reported.
The council said the main burst while Scottish Water was carrying out works.
A decision was made to close the roads fully due to the potential risk of more “undermining of the road pavement”.
Highland Council warned that it could take the water company three days to complete repairs.
Emergency services and bus operators have been notified of the closure and will be rerouted.
A Highland Council spokesperson said: “Scottish Water is responsible for the works, as the sink hole developed following a water main burst. The work is being carried out by their contractor.
“The Highland Council is in close contact with Scottish Water and will be requesting regular updates on progress of the works.
“Inverness BID and Inverness Chamber of Commerce were informed of the emergency road closure last evening and the Council has promoted the closure widely to the media, and public on social media so that local businesses, residents and the travelling public can be informed.
“Traffic Scotland, Police, Fire, Ambulance and NHS Services were also alerted to the road closure.”
Scottish Water said that an assessment of the repair needed will only be possible once the damage sewer has been exposed.
“Unfortunately, we cannot say at this stage how long the road closure will be in place but we will do all that we can to complete the necessary work as quickly and safely as possible”, a spokesperson said.
“Everything is being done to minimise any disruption although we appreciate given the location this is inevitable.
“We would like to thank everyone who is being affected for their patience and understanding.”
