Shetland's world famous Up Helly Aa fire festival to have first female junior jarl

Shetland’s world famous Up Helly Aa festival is set to have its first female junior jarl.

Erin Harries has been elected by the Junior Up Helly Aa committee for the role in next year’s celebrations.

She is the first girl to hold the role since the festival began in 1956.

Junior Up Helly Aa said Erin’s election was a “historic moment in the festival’s history and future”.

The event takes place in Lerwick on the last Tuesday of January each year and attracts visitors from around the globe.

Since 2023 and the changes announced by the Senior Up Helly Aa festival, girls have taken part in the junior procession, with the festival adopting a 50/50 participation model to ensure equal opportunities for boys and girls in the procession.

The 2026 festival also saw Ami Grains join the Junior Up Helly Aa Band.

A spokesperson from Junior Up Helly Aa said Erin’s election “reflects the enthusiasm shown by young people across Shetland towards the junior festival”.

They added: “Erin’s election is a testament to the festival’s dedication to ensuring that every participant has the chance to contribute, lead, and shape the future of this cherished tradition.

“The Junior Up Helly Aa Committee extends its warmest congratulations to Erin Harries the 2027 Junior Jarl and looks forward to supporting her as she prepares for the year ahead.

“Her leadership will stand as an inspiration to young people throughout the isles and a proud milestone in the festival’s future.”
