A fisherman had to have his arm amputated on board a vessel near Shetland.

The Marine Accident Investigations Branch (MAIB) says it is investigating the incident involving a crew member’s limb on board the Reliance III.

The boat, which is a UK-registered fishing vessel, was 50 nautical miles east of the Fair Isle when the incident took place on Friday, October 17.

HM Coastguard was called to the scene after the alarm was raised at 5.10am.

A rescue helicopter was sent, and the casualty was rescued to Aberdeen for onwards medical care.

Lerwick Coastguard Rescue Team also attended to prepare a helicopter landing site on shore.

The MAIB said investigations are at the preliminary assessment stage.

A spokesperson said: “The prompt action of the crew prevented the situation from becoming more serious.”
