Remote ‘off-gridder’ hurt by collapsing log pile

A man living without mains electricity in the remote Highlands had to be rescued after a log pile collapsed on him.

The man, who is understood to be in his 70s, alerted the emergency services using a personal security beacon after the accident on Saturday.

He was airlifted to Belford Hospital in Fort William by coastguard helicopter with help from Lochaber Mountain Rescue team.

According to reports, he was treated for minor head and chest injuries.

People living in remote areas are known as ‘off-gridders’ as their homes are not hooked up to mains electric.

The Lochaber rescue team said on Facebook: “With only half a dozen call-outs so far this year we responded to an emergency beacon set off by one of our local off-gridders yesterday.

“With assistance from R151 (Inverness Coastguard) our friend was packaged and transferred the Belford Hospital in Fort William with minor head and chest injuries after his log pile had collapsed landing on top of him.”
