The first region-wide app in Scotland with an aim to simplify travel for residents and visitors has been launched in the Highlands.

Go-Hi connection includes instant information about all forms of transport including buses, trains and bicycle hire.

It enables users to plan their trips, book and pay for all modes of transport via smart-phone.

The facility has been funded jointly by EU money and the Scottish Government.

The transport agency Hitrans has said that it is “optimistic” the app will encourage wider use of public transport.

Hitrans chairman Allan Henderson said: “This pioneering project is an ambitious region-wide solution that has the potential to make a significant contribution to improve accessibility for residents and visitors.

“It also addresses government ambitions to reduce carbon emissions by encouraging a shift from sole occupancy cars to shared cars, and public transport alternatives.

“It will also help to create healthier lifestyles by improving the sustainable travel choices people can make in the region including active travel opportunities.”

The task to enable extensive cross-referencing of travel modes and timetables began a year ago.

Those behind the technology indicate that the data will evolve to include additional transport in the coming weeks and months.
