An “incident” suspected to be a ransomware attack has caused significant disruption to the computer systems at the Western Isles local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

On Tuesday night, the council’s website went down due to the ongoing IT issue.

The local authority said that it was working with the Scottish Government and taking professional advice to establish the cause of the issue and identify actions.

It added that members of the public will be updated regularly on the progression of the incident.

In a social media post, the council said: “Access to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s IT system has been affected by an incident which has caused significant disruption.

“The current priority is to restore and secure data and ensure the continued delivery of services to those in our communities who need them most.

“Work is under way to redirect public phone numbers which will allow key services to be contacted. We will update the public regularly on the progression of this work and provide details of any further impacts to service delivery.

“The Comhairle is now engaging with Scottish Government and taking professional advice to establish the root cause of the incident and identify necessary actions.”

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has been contacted for comment.
