Rainbow splash pad finished in memory of eight-year-old

Work on a rainbow splash pad at Nairn links, created in memory of a local boy, has been completed a month ahead of schedule.

Contractors handed the site to Highland Council, who will manage it on behalf of Nairn Common Good.

The bright water play feature is a partnership project between Team Hamish, Nairn Common Good and Nairn Improvement Community Enterprise.

Nairn couple Sam and Susan Hey lost their son Hamish, 8, to a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer in February, 2017.

The family wanted to do something to thank the community because of the support they received at that time.

They also wanted to create a lasting legacy to their son, so they set up the charity Team Hamish and raised funds for the splash pad at Nairn beach. Susan lost her own battle with cancer earlier this year.

Sam Hey, Team Hamish, said: “This wonderful achievement was only made possible through the incredible support and generosity by the community of Nairn, and beyond, over the last three years.

“The creation of this amazing splash pad is a wonderful and lasting legacy in both Hamish and Susan’s memory and a place that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities for many years to come.”

The splash pad replaces the former paddling pool on the Nairn Links and will be available throughout the year.

Councillor Tom Heggie, area committee chairman, added: “I am delighted that the Nairn splash pad is now complete. It’s going to be a fantastic facility for the community of Nairn and all the visitors that come to our town every year.”

Although the splash pad is now complete, clarity is being sought on Covid compliance.

An opening date will be announced once this clarification is received.
