Three Puma helicopters have been deployed to RAF Kinloss in Moray to bolster the UK Government’s coronavirus pandemic response.
The aircraft, normally stationed at RAF Benson in South Oxfordshire, will operate in tandem with a Chinook and a Wildcat helicopter at RAF Leeming in north Yorkshire to respond to requests for assistance from the NHS across Scotland and northern England.
Military personnel and logistics have been tasked to help with the response, including working alongside the Scottish Government’s emergency co-ordination centre team, as well as helping with the national effort.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “Our aircraft are ready to support emergency services and local communities wherever needed across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland – the armed forces have always got your back.”
Moray Conservative MP Douglas Ross said: “This demonstrates how serious the situation is but should also reassure people in Moray and the north of Scotland that the government is at a full state of readiness to deal with coronavirus cases and will be assisting local health boards wherever required.
“In Moray, we’ve always known how lucky we are to have a large military presence here and have welcomed them as a vital part of our community, appreciating the work they do to keep us safe.”
