Plans have been published for another major hydro-electric project in the Highlands.
A pump-storage system that works like a giant rechargeable battery is proposed for two lochs, west of Invergarry.
Cumbria-based developer Gilkes Energy says it would provide power for 1.5million homes.
If approved, it could be operational from the mid 2030s.
Loch Quoich would form a lower reservoir without the need for modification to support both the existing Quoich Hydro scheme and the company’s proposed Fearna pump storage project. It would also avoid the need for additional dams.
The technology uses excess off-peak power to pump water uphill into holding reservoirs. When electricity is needed, the water is sent through turbines back down to a lower reservoir.
Loch Fearna would be the upper reservoir while Loch Quoich, near Kinloch Hourn, would be the lower.
Gilkes Energy has submitted a scoping report to the Scottish Government for a 2000 megawatt facility.
It says the construction work would create about 500 jobs.
