A person has died after being struck by a train in the Highlands.

Emergency services were called to the line between Nairn and Elgin at around 7.30am on Friday morning following reports of a casualty.

Paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene.

Detectives are not treating the incident as suspicious. A report is due to be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

ScotRail confirmed that the line was closed for a number of hours and rail tickets were being accepted on Stagecoach North services.

The line later reopened around 1pm and services returned to normal by 3pm.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “We were called to an area of the line in Inverness at around 7.30am on April 10 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Officers attended along with paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.”
