A local shop in Orkney has raised over £6,000 for charity after ordering more Easter eggs than the island’s population.

Sinclair General Store owner, Dan Dafydd, made the blunder while ordering 80 chocolate eggs instead requesting 80 cases by accident.

Mr Dafydd said the shop ended up with a stock of 720 chocolate eggs in stock for an island with a population of around 500 people on delivery day.

After the story went viral, the owner decided to put the blunder to good use and raffle the treats off to raise money for the local RNLI branch.

“It’s nice that my stupidity can do something good for the RNLI, and people on the island love a competition, so it’s worked out for the best.”

The story reached well beyond the local community with Mr Dafydd telling STV News he received calls from Australia and Singapore asking to buy tickets.

The tale even reached Nestle, the makers of the eggs, who offered to double every donation and bring the fundraising total to over £6,000.

Nestle UK has been contacted for comment.
