A book has finally been returned to Orkney Library 47 years after it should have been brought back.
Alan Byde’s Canoe Building in Glass-Reinforced Plastic was expected to be returned in March 1977.
After almost five decades, the book has finally been checked back in after being discovered during a house clearance.
The library’s said on X: “Fortunately we don’t charge overdue fines”.
“But even if we did we don’t know who to charge because it’s so long ago that we don’t know who borrowed it.
“So we’ll never know if the canoe was ever built…”
The book, described as providing “step-by-step guidance in kayak-construction, including information on materials, tools, techniques, and repairs”, was originally published in 1974.
