One person dead after fire breaks out in middle of night at flat

Fire crews remained at the scene of the blaze on Tomatin Road in Inverness for nine hours.

One person has died after a fire broke out in the middle of the night at a flat in Inverness.

Residents were forced to flee their homes after the blaze took hold of the building on Tomatin Road just after 2am on Thursday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said four fire engines and a height appliance were sent to the scene, where they were able to extinguish the blaze. They later left the scene around 11am.

On Thursday afternoon, police confirmed one person had died following the fire.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are under way.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a fire at a property on Tomatin Road, Inverness, around 2.10am on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

“Emergency services are in attendance and one person has died as a result of the fire.

“A number of residents have been evacuated.

“Tomatin Road is closed and is expected to re-open shortly.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
