A new boat owner revealed how “excited” he was after he accidently sailed his vessel into a group of 25 basking sharks.
Jamie Walker took his new sail boat out with friends five miles off the coast of Nairn on Saturday, before they came across what they thought was a “large group of sea birds”.
As they got closer, the group noticed fins, and realised they had stumbled upon 25 basking sharks.
Jamie said: “Obviously some of the group were a bit excited and this was amazing.
“I had just bought a new sail boat and with the help of friends was moving it from Inverness to Nairn, at first we thought it was a large group of sea birds because of the group size.
“But as we got closer we saw all the fins.
“We counted approximately 25 basking sharks.”
The docile creatures, which can grow up to 40 feet in length, mainly feed on plankton and are relatively common drifting through the waters off Scotland.
The animals generally travel alone, but can congregate in pods or “shivers” of up to 100 creatures.
