A building in Nairn has been deemed “at risk of collapse” after a devastating blaze engulfed its top floor.
Fire crews were called to reports of a building ablaze on Harbour Street shortly after 1pm on Friday, June 9.
A top floor flat in the three-storey building had become consumed by flames, with thick plumes of smoke billowing over the street.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, however the flat and building’s roof appeared to be completely destroyed.
A local councillor has now confirmed that fire crews believe the building to be “at risk of collapse”.
Sharing an update on his blog, Nairn and Cawdor councillor Paul Oldham said: “SFRS believes the building is at risk of collapse and have asked for a structural engineer, Heras fencing and road closure.”
Meanwhile, eight flats within the waterfront property have been made “uninhabitable”, with NHS Highland and Highland Council helping affected residents.
Police Scotland urged members of the public to stay away from the area while the incident was ongoing.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Emergency services are in attendance at a building fire on Harbour Road in Nairn. The incident is currently ongoing and we would ask members of the public to avoid the area at this time.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 1.09pm on Friday, June 9 to reports of a fire affecting a top floor flat in a three-storey building on Harbour Street, Nairn.
“Operations Control mobilised seven appliances and a height vehicle to the scene to extinguish the fire and crews remain at the scene as they work to make the area safe.
“There are no reported casualties.”
