A motorcyclist has died following a crash with a car on the Isle of Lewis.

Emergency services were called to the A857 Ness to Stornoway road near New Park, Newmarket, around 4.40pm on Saturday, to reports of a crash involving a silver MG and a black BMW S1000 RS motorcycle.

The 56-year-old male motorcyclist was taken to Western Isles Hospital, where he died. His family are aware.

No other injuries were reported.

The 44-year-old male driver has been arrested in connection with the incident, and investigations are ongoing.

The road was closed to allow enquiries to be carried out and reopened around 5am on Sunday.

Police sergeant Scott MacDonald said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died as a result of this crash.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or the vehicles prior to contact us.

“I would also ask anyone who was in the area and may have dash cam footage that could assist to get in touch.”
