A former Catholic monk has been brought back to Scotland from Australia to face seven historic child abuse charges.

Denis Alexander was accused of indecent assault, lewd behaviour and libidinous practices when he appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court on Friday.

He is accused of abusing children under the age of 14.

The 85-year-old, from New South Wales in Australia, who used to teach at Fort Augustus Abbey school in the Highlands, was remanded in custody.

He is expected to appear in court again next week.

He was arrested in Sydney three years ago and has been remanded in custody ever since.
