Searches are continuing for a missing hiker who disappeared while walking the Cape Wrath Trail in the Highlands.

Ian Currie, from Edinburgh, was last seen in the Glenfinnan area on Tuesday, September 16 as he set off to walk the route.

He failed to arrive at Inverie Bunkhouse on Thursday, September 18 as planned and was reported missing to police.

Extensive searches have been carried out for the 76-year-old, who is a keen and experienced walker.

Specialist officers including mountain rescue, search and rescue dogs association and Lochaber and Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue teams are checking the area for any signs of Ian. They are being assisted by the HM Coastguard helicopter.

Police previously believed Ian may have strayed from his planned path due to phone activity, however a witness has now reported a sighting of him around 4pm on Tuesday 5km north of Fort William train station on the Cape Wrath Trail.

A CCTV image of Ian at Fort William train station has been released, showing he was wearing a black waterproof jacket when he was last seen and carrying a rucksack with a green tent.

Ian is white, around 6ft tall, of medium build, with white hair and wears glasses

Inspector Kay Macrae said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have been walking in the Glenfinnan area to get in touch if they believe they have seen Ian.

“I would like to thank the members of the public who have come forward with information, these are vital to help us locate Ian. Please think back to Tuesday, did you see anyone that matches Ian’s description? Does the new CCTV image jog your memory? If so contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 3967 of Thursday, September 18, 2025.
