A man has been airlifted to hospital and transferred to Glasgow after a serious road crash on the Isle of Lewis.

Police are appealing for information after the 60-year-old male rider of a motorcycle crashed on the A857 Ness to Stornoway Road.

The incident occurred near South Galson around 7.30am on Friday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene where the driver was airlifted to Western Isles Hospital and was then transferred to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

He remains in serious condition.  

The road was closed for around 10 hours while a full collision investigation was carried out and re-opened at 5.30pm.

Sergeant Calum MacAulay, of Dingwall’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the crash are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may be able to help with our investigation to get in touch.

“We would be especially keen to hear from anyone who may have been driving in the area and witnessed what happened or has dash-cam footage of the motorcycle involved.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident number 0492 of October 14.”
