Man 'carried for two hours on stretcher' off mountain after suffering chest pain

A walker was carried on a stretcher for two hours off a mountain in Skye after suffering chest pain.

Skye Mountain Rescue team were called by Police Scotland around 7pm on Saturday to assist a 23-year-old man walking the Skye Trail, who had developed chest pain while camping.

The man was situated midway between Creag a’ Lain and Baca Ruadh on the Trotternish Ridge.

Volunteers say it was one of several Skye Trail-related rescues for the team over the past ten days.

Poor weather meant the Coastguard helicopter from Oban was unable to reach him directly, but the crew were able to drop six of the team, along with the necessary equipment, as close as conditions allowed.

From there, volunteers continued on foot to reach him, then performed a two-hour stretcher carry to a location where the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter could land.

He was then airlifted to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.

A statement read: “We hope he is doing well and wish him a speedy recovery.

“Our thanks to the Coastguard helicopter crews from Oban and Stornoway for their assistance in difficult conditions.”
