Major emergency search of loch after person missing in water

A search of a loch near Fort William is ongoing after a person reportedly entered the water on Wednesday.

A large emergency service response, including Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team, the RNLI Oban lifeboat and an HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter, was called to Loch Linhe at around 6.30pm.

The search is ongoing more than 12 hours after initial reports.

Coastguard teams from Salen, Mallaig and Fort William were also dispatched to assist the police and fire service operation.

“At around 6.30pm on Wednesday (December 4), HM Coastguard received reports of a person in waters at Loch Linnhe, Scotland,” a spokesperson said.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams from Salen, Mallaig and Fort William were called to assist in the search, alongside Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team, the RNLI Oban lifeboat and an HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are also in attendance.  

“The search remains ongoing.”
