A light aircraft has been forced to make an emergency landing on farmland in Orkney.

The unscheduled touchdown occurred near Wideford Hill, west of Kirkwall, shortly after 2.15pm on Friday.

Only the pilot was in the aircraft at the time and managed to escape uninjured.

The incident has been reported to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Orkney Police said: “We are aware of a light aircraft having made an emergency landing on farmland close to Wideford Hill near Kirkwall.

“The pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft and was uninjured. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been made aware.”
