The crimes of a Scots rapist who faked his own death are set to be explored in a new BBC documentary.

The Disclosure documentary will reveal the “untold story” of Kim Avis, from Inverness, who raped and molested victims during a decade-long campaign of sex crimes in the Highlands.

The BBC describes the documentary, titled Dead Man Running, as the story of how the “darkest of crimes were hidden in plain sight for decades”.

Avis was convicted of 14 charges after a two-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow in 2021.

Avis, also a well known busker in the city, was originally supposed to stand trial in March 2019, but fled to America where he was then reported missing by his 17-year-old son Reuben.

The fugitive was caught 1300 miles away in Colorado after being tracked down to low-cost motel after a police stake-out in July 2019.

Avis was taken back to Scotland and found guilty of preying on two girls and two women between 2006 and 2017 mainly in Inverness including at his property called Wolves Den.

He was sentenced to 12 years for the sex crimes he committed and imprisoned for a further three years for failing to appear in court.

The documentary is set to air on BBC One on Wednesday at 9pm.
