An Inverness street has reopened after a chemical spill near a police station caused a four-hour lockdown.

Fire crews were called to Burnett Street at around 12.17pm on Monday, following reports of a chemical spill.

Images from the scene showed two firefighters wearing hazmat suits in the police station car park.

A local businessowner told STV News his shop had been locked down for four hours, with customers unable to leave, while the situation unfolded.

The street was reopened by around 4pm.

A SFRS spokesperson said: “We were requested at 12.17pm on Monday, June 19 to support our emergency service partners in Inverness.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the city’s Burnett Road, where firefighters worked to support their partners.

“Firefighters left the scene having ensured the area had been made safe.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Following an earlier report of a chemical spill at Burnett Road, Inverness, the road has now reopened.”
