A driverless bus at Inverness Campus has been vandalised days before it was due to be trialled.

The ten-seater Auto Shuttle electric vehicle bus will be used to transport around the University of the Highlands and Islands’ campus once operational.

The vehicle was being stored behind a security fence when it was targeted between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Repairs are now having to be undertaken on the bus ahead of trials taking place this week.

A spokesperson for HITRANS said: “HITRANS are very disappointed that this vandalism has occurred.

“This has been reported to the police and we hope to see this incident investigated and the person responsible held to account for their crime.

“Engineers from Aurrigo have assessed the damage and hope to be able to repair the vehicle to allow the trial to commence on Tuesday.”

The project is being led by the University of Glasgow alongside Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (Hitrans), Aurrigo International plc, Stagecoach North Scotland and Darwin Innovation Group Ltd.

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
