Increase in missing children cases in Highlands

The number of children reported missing in the South Highlands has more than doubled since last year.

Figures contained in the local chief inspector’s police report revealed that 40 children were reported missing this year compared to just 17 the year prior – an increase of 57%.

The documents detail how overall the amount of people reported missing in the years 2024/25 to 2025/26 rose by 33% with the biggest increase in cases being children.

The report has been compiled by chief inspector Scott Robertson who was covering for the area’s commander chief inspector Donna Allan.

The details are due to go before Highland Council’s Badenoch and Strathspey area committee today (Monday).

Each area within the Highlands and Islands Police division has its own dedicated missing person co-ordinator who helps the officers and charities approach the case, however the report mentioned how the increase was placing “significant demand” on resources.

Despite the overall rise in cases the number of care experienced young people reported missing dropped from 18 cases in 2024/25 to just six in 2025/26.

South Highlands is one of six area commands in Police Scotland’s Highlands and Islands division and includes Badenoch and Strathspey.

It also includes Nairnshire, Lochaber, Skye and Raasay.

Police Scotland have attributed the rise in cases to better reporting from partner agencies and improved guidance for officers, with most cases being resolved within 24 hours.
