Human remains have been found in the wreckage of a plane discovered in the North Sea near Shetland.

The small aircraft was recovered from the water in the north-east of Lerwick around 2.20pm on Friday.

The aircraft was then brought to shore by a fishing boat on Sunday, and the remains were found inside.

Investigations into the discovery are ongoing.

A light aircraft which took off from Germany with one person on board lost contact over the North Sea on September 30 last year.

HM Coastguard supported German authorities in searching for the aircraft between Shetland and Norway, however, the search was stood down on October 2 after no trace was found.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police received a report of a small aircraft having been recovered from the water in the North Sea, north-east of Lerwick, around 2.20pm on Friday, December 6.

“The aircraft was brought to shore on Sunday, December 8, and human remains were found within.”
