Horse and rider struck by car as police launch investigation

Police have launched an investigation after a horse rider was struck by a car in Orkney.

The rider and horse were on Echra Road, on the A961 from the Orkney Fossil & Heritage Centre towards Burray, at around 6.30pm on Sunday when they were hit.

The car involved has been described as a Ford Fiesta.

The condition of those involved is unknown at this stage and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.25pm on Sunday, June 23, 2024, we received a report that a horse and its rider had been struck by a Ford Fiesta around 6.30pm that evening on Echra Road.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish more details on this incident.”
